Life and register readings
Born in Niğde in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Mehmed Şükrü Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Work began in 1883/84, at about 16. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Mehmed Şükrü as Matbah-ı Amire İdare Kalemi mülazımı and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1889.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 800 in 1905/06, when three in four paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 700 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
