Life and register readings

Karnik Hilmi Efendi was born in Bursa in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Hristiyan community. The schooling was at an Armenian school for young children (Ermeni Sıbyan Mektebi).

At about 17, in 1875/76, Karnik Hilmi began work. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Karnik Hilmi as mektubî kalemi (mülazemet) and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1887, 1888 to 1891 and 1892 to 1894. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1894/95.

The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 250 in 1891/92, the peak, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 16,920 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
