Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Vasfi Bey began in Bosna in 1852/53 (AH 1269); the father's occupation was "Boşka kaymakamı". Work began in Hersek in 1865/66, at about 13. Few began so young; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Mehmed Vasfi in Hersek as Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı, where the entries run to 1875/76. For 1876 to 1881 the lists have no entry. The last entries, from 1881 to 1903, name Mehmed Vasfi as Vergi kâtibi, with a rise to Mal Muduru in 1896/97, with no place.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1896/97, the peak, as Mal Muduru, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less.
