Life and register readings
Born in Antalya in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Yavlus Efendi came from the Hristiyan community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Antalya in 1877/78, at about 16. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Yavlus as Bidayet mahkemesi mülazımı in Antalya, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1884/85. Alongside, the lists for 1884/85 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Reji muvakkat tütün tahrir kâtibi. Next came Alanya (Alaiye) from 1885 to 1893. For 1886 to 1888 the lists have no entry. At the same time, from 1892/93, the lists also place Yavlus in Antalya as Düyun-ı Umumiye müdüriyeti ikinci kâtibi.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 500 in 1885/86, in Alanya, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 250 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
