Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Ziya Efendi began in Harput in 1859/60 (AH 1276). At about 25, in 1884/85, Mehmed Ziya began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 576 in 1892/93, the peak, as Nahiye Muduru, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 84,312 kuruş, 85 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
