Life and register readings
Mehmed Tevfik Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1862/63 (AH 1279); the father's occupation was "Emekli Saray-ı Hümayun bekçisi". At about 20, in 1882/83, Mehmed Tevfik began work, on a first salary of 60 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, names Mehmed Tevfik as Harem-i Hümayun Matbah-ı Kiler hizmetlisi, with no place.
The salary went from 180 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to 600 in 1905/06, the peak, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş.
