Life and register readings
Mustafa Efendi was born in Komotini (Gümülcine) in 1832/33 (AH 1248). At about 30, in 1862/63, Mustafa began work, on a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1862/63, with Mustafa as Köygölü Memlehası ikinci kâtibi and no place named. Mustafa then moved back to Komotini, the birthplace, from 1869 to 1873. Next came a return to Komotini from 1875 to 1884. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1881 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Köygölü Memlehası başkâtibi. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1868/69, 1873/74, 1877/78 and 1880/81; Vefat (death) for 1883/84 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 500 in 1868/69, when 52 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 225 kuruş. After 22 years the salary stood below the first, 300 kuruş against 400. In all, 22 years of salary come to 97,680 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.
