Life and register readings
Born in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1814/15 (AH 1230), Seyyid Ahmed Avni Efendi was the child of a cavalryman holding a fief (sipahi). Work began in 1829/30, at about 15. The annual lists begin in 1829/30, with Ahmed Avni as Sipahi mülâzımı and no place named. Next came Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1830 to 1832, then a post with no place named from 1844 to 1862. The lists have no entry for 1832 to 1844 and 1845 to 1849. Alongside, the lists for 1861 to 1863 give a second post, in Gaziantep as Arazi memuru. The annual lists then follow Ahmed Avni to Aleppo in 1863/64 and Gaziantep in 1880/81. For 1864 to 1880 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1882 to 1891. Entries spanning 64 years are rare, reached by only 8 of the 8,239 officials.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1849/50 to a peak of 830 in 1890/91, in Istanbul, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 144,360 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1890/91.
