Life and register readings
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Musevilik community, Refail Musa Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Aleppo in 1885/86, at about 13, on a first salary of 308 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Refail Musa as Halep Vilayeti Telgraf Merkezi Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiyye memuru in Aleppo, the birthplace. At the same time, from 1892/93, the lists also place Refail Musa in Adana as Adana Telgraf Merkezi Lisan-ı Ecnebiyye memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1892 to 1894 give a second post, in Mersin as Mersin Telgraf Merkezi Lisan-ı Ecnebiyye memuru. Refail Musa then moved to Diyarbakır from 1894 to 1896. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1897 give a second post, in Aleppo as Halep Telgraf ve Posta Merkezi Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiyye memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1896 to 1899 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Alucı Telgraf ve Posta Merkezi Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiyye memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1898/99 give a second post, in Jerusalem as Kudüs-i Şerif Telgraf Merkezi muhabere memuru. Pay rose from 308 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,000 in 1898/99, in Jerusalem, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
