Life and register readings
Ömer Efendi was born in Bosna in 1878 (AH 1295); the father's occupation was "Topçu binbaşısı". Work began in 1903/04, at about 25, on a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Ömer in Hicaz Demiryolu as Hicaz Demiryolu mühendis muavini. At the same time, from 1904 to 1910, the lists also place Ömer in a post with no place named as Hüdavendigâr mühendisi. Alongside, the lists for 1909/10 give a second post, in Bitola as Selanik-Manastır Demiryolu Manastır komiseri.
Pay rose from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 2,000 in 1909/10, in Bitola, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 125,400 kuruş, 3.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
