Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Naci Efendi began in Gaziantep (Antep) in 1832/33 (AH 1248). At about 22, in 1854/55, Mehmed Naci began work in Latakia (Lazkiye), on a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1854/55, places Mehmed Naci in Latakia as Sancak tahrirat kâtipliği, where the entries run to 1856/57. Next came Aleppo (Halep) from 1857 to 1862. For 1862 to 1866 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1858 to 1860 give a second post, in Antakya as Hale-i İşar memuru refakati. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Naci back to Aleppo from 1866 to 1870. Alongside, the lists for 1869 to 1871 give a second post, in Adana as Vilayet mektupçu muavinliği. From 1872 to 1893 every annual entry places Mehmed Naci again in Aleppo. The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1880.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to 3,000 in 1869/70, the peak, in Adana, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 30 years the salary stood below the first, 200 kuruş against 350. In all, 30 years of salary come to 423,540 kuruş, 2.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
