Life and register readings
Mehmed Saim Efendi was born in Burdur in 1867/68 (AH 1284); the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Work began in 1892/93, at about 25, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmed Saim as Çiftlikat-ı Süvari kolcusu and no place named. For 1894 to 1898 the lists have no entry. Mehmed Saim then moved back to Burdur, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1903. Alongside, the lists for 1907 to 1909 give a second post, in Burdur as Tahsildar.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 350 in 1904/05, the peak, as Suvari Tahsildari, when 37 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 12 years the salary stood below the first, 200 kuruş against 250. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 43,200 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
