Life and register readings
Born in Istanbul in 1835/36 (AH 1251), Mehmed İzzet Efendi was the child of a steward (kethüda). Work began in 1864/65, at about 29, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1864/65, with Mehmed İzzet as Kiler hıdemalığı and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1886 to 1897. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1906/07. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 44 years or more.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 1,200 in 1884/85, the peak, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 33 years of salary come to 262,920 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
