Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Halid Efendi began in Homs (Humus) in 1857/58 (AH 1274). Work began in 1875/76, at about 17, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Mehmed Halid in Homs, the birthplace, as Suriye Arazi-i Seniyye Komisyonu Humus Şubesi kâtibi, where the entries run to 1901/02.
