Life and register readings

The life of Mehmet Đnayet Efendi began in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264). Work began in 1856/57, at about 9, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. Only 29 of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 9 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1856/57, names Mehmet Đnayet as Enderun çırağı, with no place. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Đnayet to Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1870 to 1872. Alongside, the lists for 1874/75 give a second post, in Asir as Sandık emini. Mehmet Đnayet then moved to Van from 1880 to 1882, with a rise to Mal müdürü ve tahrirat kâtibi in 1878/79 and to Asar Muduru in 1881/82, then a post with no place named from 1892 to 1905. The last posts were in Kastamonu in 1907/08 and Basra in 1910/11. The farthest post, Al Hudaydah, lay about 3,200 km from Istanbul, and 8 of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. Few careers in the lists are as long; 29 of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 56 years or more.

The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to 2,700 in 1907/08, the peak, as Muhasebeci in Kastamonu, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
