Life and register readings
Mehmed Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289); the father's occupation was "Beyoğlu Bidayet Mahkemesi Birinci Hukuk Dairesi zabıt kâtibi". Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Mehmed Tevfik in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Altıncı Daire-i Belediye Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı, where the entries run to 1898/99. The last entries, from 1899 to 1910, name Mehmed Tevfik as Matbah-ı Amire İdare Kalemi kâtibi, with no place. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1898/99 and Azil (dismissal) for 1909/10.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 450 in 1903/04, the peak, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
