Life and register readings
Ömer Şerif Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1861/62 (AH 1278). Work began in 1882/83, at about 21. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, names Ömer Şerif as Zabit sınıfı şakirdanı; mülazım-ı sani, with no place. Next came Erzurum and Basra from 1889 to 1893. At the same time, from 1892 to 1896, the lists also place Ömer Şerif in Baghdad (Bağdat) as Arazi-i Seniyye Komisyonunda keşif, tamir, hudut yenileme ve harita tanzimi görevlisi. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1898 give a second post, in Mosul as Emlak-ı Hümayun Komisyonu memuru. For 1898 to 1902 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1897 to 1903 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Musul Emlak-ı Hümayun Komisyonuna bağlı Sılahiye şubesi memuru.
The salary went from 240 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 1,000 in 1895/96, the peak, in Mosul, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 36,480 kuruş, 1.8 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
