Life and register readings
Born in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) in 1845 (AH 1261) into the İslam community, Süleyman Hayri Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 16, in 1860/61, Süleyman Hayri began work in Afyonkarahisar. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Süleyman Hayri in Afyonkarahisar, the birthplace, as Tahrirat kalemi devamı. Alongside, the lists for 1869/70 give a second post, in Istanbul as Hadika gazetesi idaresi. Alongside, the lists for 1869/70 give a second post, in Karamürsel as Tahrirat kâtibi. The annual lists then follow Süleyman Hayri to Adapazarı, İzmit, Benghazi (Bingazi) and Basra, four places in 11 years. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1882 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Defter-i Hakanî müfettiş muavini. Next came Kastamonu from 1882 to 1885. The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 2,500 in 1879/80, the peak, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1885/86.
