Life and register readings

The life of Mehmed Efendi began in Çemişgezek in 1871/72 (AH 1288). Work began in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 12. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Mehmed in Istanbul as Evkaf-ı Hümayun Nezareti muhasebe kalemi mülazımı. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1885. For 1887 to 1889 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1886/87 give a second post, in Pah as Tahrirat kâtibi. Next came Kocgiri from 1889 to 1891. At the same time, from 1890 to 1892, the lists also place Mehmed in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) as Reji İdaresi muhafaza kâtibi. From 1894 to 1906 the annual entries place Mehmed again in Istanbul. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1886/87 and 1891/92; Vefat (death) for 1905/06 instead of a title.

Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 420 in 1901/02, in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
