Life and register readings
Ömer Fehmi Efendi was born in Komotini (Gümülcine) in 1856/57 (AH 1273); the father was a merchant (tüccar). At about 17, in 1874/75, Ömer Fehmi began work in Komotini, on a first salary of 190 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1874/75, to 1884/85, every annual entry places Ömer Fehmi in the same post, Rüsumat İdaresi kantar kâtibi, in Komotini, the birthplace. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1878 and 1884/85; Infisal for 1880/81.
