Life and register readings
The life of Ömer Recmi Efendi began in Tokat in 1847/48 (AH 1264); the father's occupation was "Hekim". Work began in Tokat in 1863/64, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, names Ömer Recmi as Gümrük stajyeri, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1864 to 1867 give a second post, in Erbaa as Tahrirat Kâtip Muavini. At the same time, from 1866/67, the lists also place Ömer Recmi in Sivas as Tahrir Kayıt Memuru. The annual lists then follow Ömer Recmi to Zile from 1867 to 1869. The lists have no entry for 1871 to 1880. From 1880 to 1894 the annual entries place Ömer Recmi in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 400 in 1868/69, in Zile, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
