Life and register readings
Nikola Gazban ( Gobdan ) Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1835/36 (AH 1251); the father's occupation was "Mehmed Ali Paşa tercümanı; Galata Ticaret Borsası direktörü". The personnel record dates the first work in Istanbul to 1856/57, after the first annual entry, on a first salary of 1,000 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1845/46, with Nikola Gazban ( Gobdan ) as Şark Mektebi öğrencisi and no place named. For 1846 to 1856 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Nikola Gazban ( Gobdan ) to Istanbul, Aleppo (Halep) and Adana from 1856 to 1874, then back to Istanbul from 1874 to 1880, with a rise to Ticareti Bahriye Mahkemesi Azasi in 1878 and to İstinaf Mahkemesi ticaret kısmı azası in 1879/80. Nikola Gazban ( Gobdan ) then moved to Plovdiv in 1885/86. The last posts were in Pazar (Atina) from 1891 to 1894. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 2 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 50 years or more.
The salary went from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to 10,000 in 1891/92, the peak, in Pazar, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
