Life and register readings
Born in Malatya in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mehmed Faik Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Devriye müderrisi". The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Mehmed Faik in Malatya, the birthplace, as Yevmiye Tahsilat Kâtibi, where the entries run to 1878. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1880 give a second post, in Diyarbakır as Birinci Fırka-i Seyyare Muharrir-i Sanisi. At the same time, from 1879 to 1881, the lists also place Mehmed Faik in Malatya as Vukuat Kâtibi.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 720 in 1879/80, in Diyarbakır, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1880/81.
