Life and register readings
Mehmed Tevfik Efendi was born in Malatya in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the İslam community. Work began in 1886/87, at about 31, on a first salary of 95 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1886/87, with Mehmed Tevfik as maaş tahsisi (görev belirtilmemiş) and no place named. Mehmed Tevfik then moved to Gelibolu and Lüleburgaz from 1888 to 1891. Alongside, the lists for 1890 to 1898 give a second post, in Alexandroupoli as Bidayet Mahkemesi Reisi. The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1898 to 1901.
Pay rose from 95 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 2,800 in 1890/91, in Alexandroupoli, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,520 kuruş. Over eight years the salaries add up to 195,780 kuruş, 5 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
