Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mehmed Ali Efendi came from the İslam community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Mehmed Ali began work in 1882/83, at about 29, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, names Mehmed Ali as Dersaâdet polis ikinci bölüğünün yedinci çavuşunun dördüncü neferliği, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1890, 1891 to 1895 and 1902 to 1908. In place of a title the lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1908/09.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 3,000 in 1901/02, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 79,860 kuruş, 2.7 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
