Mehmed Nuri Efendi

Mehmed Nuri Efendi was born in Elbistan; the father's occupation was "Âlim". Work began in Sidon (Sayda) in 1893/94 (AH 1311). The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmed Nuri as Sayda naibi in Sidon, where the entries run to 1895/96. Next came Kilis and Beypazarı from 1900 to 1907. At the same time, from 1909 to 1913, the lists also place Mehmed Nuri in Karbala (Kerbela) as Kerbela naibi. Alongside, the lists for 1912 to 1915 give a second post, in Denizli as Denizli naibi. Alongside, the lists for 1914/15 give a second post, in Kahramanmaraş as Maraş kadısı. Five provinces in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 3,000 kuruş a month in 1909/10, in Karbala, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 240,000 kuruş, 3.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. On average the pay stood in the top 9.3 per cent of each year's paid officials; fewer than 4 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The final annual entry is for 1914/15.
