Life and register readings
Born in Safranbolu in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the İslam community, Osman Tevfik Efendi was the child of an imam. At about 26, in 1875/76, Osman Tevfik began work in Safranbolu. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Osman Tevfik in Safranbolu, the birthplace, as Aşar, vergi ve mal kalemleri mülazımı, where the entries run to 1882/83. Alongside, the lists for 1882/83 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Nahiye vergi kâtibi.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77, in Safranbolu, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 24,000 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1882/83.
