Life and register readings
Süleyman Efendi was born in Bosna in 1856/57 (AH 1273); the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). At about 39, in 1895/96, Süleyman began work, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 39 or older. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, names Süleyman as Matbah-ı Âmire idare hademesi, with no place.
