Life and register readings
Mehmed İslam Efendi was born in Ohrid (Ohri); the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Work began in Bitola (Manastır) in 1894/95 (AH 1312). The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmed İslam as Mektubi Kalemi stajyeri in Bitola, where the entries run to 1896/97. At the same time, from 1896 to 1899, the lists also place Mehmed İslam in Servia (Serfiçe) as Duyun-u Umumiye Müdürlüğü ikinci kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1897/98 give a second post, in Trikala as Duyun-u Umumiye memur vekili. Mehmed İslam then moved to Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1898 to 1904. For 1904 to 1906 the lists have no entry. The last entry, for 1906/07, names Mehmed İslam as Ziraat Bankası veznedar vekili, with no place.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 600 in 1902/03, the peak, in Thessaloniki, when 67 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
