Life and register readings
Mahmud Efendi was born in Dagistan in 1859/60 (AH 1276); the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 18, in 1878, Mahmud began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1878, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Mahmud in the same post, Mabeyn-i Hümayun evrak-ı hususiye tahrir ve tebyiz memuru, in Istanbul. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1878/79.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1878 to 720 in 1902/03, the peak, in Istanbul, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 175,740 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
