Life and register readings
Veysel Cemil Efendi was born in Antalya in 1862/63 (AH 1279); the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). At about 11, in 1873/74, Veysel Cemil began work in Antalya, on a first salary of 120 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Veysel Cemil in Antalya, the birthplace, as Rüsumat Müdürlüğü mukayyidi, where the entries run to 1889/90.
