Life and register readings
Born in Tuzla in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Mehmed Sami Efendi was the child of a deputy judge (naip). At about 17, in 1869/70, Mehmed Sami began work in Sarajevo (Saraybosna). The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Mehmed Sami in Sarajevo as Telgrafhane mülazımı. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1877 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Telgrafhane muhabere memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1876 to 1878 give a second post, in Sarajevo as Telgrafhane muhabere memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1877 to 1878 give a second post, in Višegrad as Telgrafhane muhabere memuru. The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1896. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1897 give a second post, in Edirne as Merkez posta seyyar memuru. For 1897 to 1902 the lists have no entry. The last entries, from 1902 to 1906, name Mehmed Sami as Posta seyyar memuru, with no place.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 700 in 1905/06, the peak, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
