Life and register readings

Born in Sivas in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Mehmet Celalettin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Celalettin began work in 1867/68, at about 15. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Mehmet Celalettin as stajyer and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1868 to 1872. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Celalettin to Suşehri in 1872/73. For 1873 to 1875 the lists have no entry. The last entries, from 1875 to 1884, name Mehmet Celalettin as vergi kâtibi, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1876 to 1883.

The salary went from 140 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 250 in 1883/84, the peak, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 5,100 kuruş, 32 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.

Places in order of time
