Süleyman Faik Efendi

Süleyman Faik Efendi was born in Harput in 1844/45 (AH 1260); the father's occupation was "Mamuratülaziz Vilayeti muhasebe vekili (emekli)". At about 24, in 1868/69, Süleyman Faik began work. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Süleyman Faik as Vilayet mektupçu kalemi mülazımı and no place named. Next came Adana from 1886 to 1889. Alongside, the lists for 1888 to 1890 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Vilayet mektupçusu. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1891 give a second post, in Aydın as Vilayet mektupçusu. The annual lists then follow Süleyman Faik to Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1891 to 1893. Alongside, the lists for 1892/93 give a second post, in Diyarbakır as Vilayet mektupçusu. The last posts were in Shkodër in 1896/97 and Siirt from 1897 to 1899. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.

Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 6,750 in 1897/98, in Siirt, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 84.4 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 3 per cent of the 2,724 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
