Life and register readings

Mustafa Efendi was born in Bursa in 1833/34 (AH 1249) into the İslam community; the father was a tanner (debbağ). At about 29, in 1862/63, Mustafa began work. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, names Mustafa as tahrir-i emlak musahhallığı, with no place. For 1863 to 1865, 1874 to 1876, 1880 to 1885 and 1886 to 1890 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1869/70, Infisal for 1871/72 and Vefat (death) for 1885/86.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 11 years the salary stood below the first, 240 kuruş against 400. In all, 11 years of salary come to 39,240 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1890/91.
