Life and register readings
Reşid Efendi was born in Harput in 1842/43 (AH 1258), into the İslam community. Work began in 1860/61, at about 18. The annual lists begin in 1860/61, with Reşid as Defter-i Hakani Kalemi mülazımı and no place named. At the same time, from 1874/75, the lists also place Reşid in Palu as Merkez ağnam kâtibi.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 400 in 1878, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years the salaries add up to 28,800 kuruş, 55 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1878.
