Life and register readings
Born in Muğla in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mehmed Nuri Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). At about 28, in 1881/82, Mehmed Nuri began work in Marmaris, on a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Mehmed Nuri as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru) in Marmaris. Mehmed Nuri then moved back to Muğla, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1886. The last posts were in Bodrum and Marmaris from 1886 to 1890 and Bodrum again in 1890/91.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 500 in 1882/83, the peak, in Marmaris, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1890/91.
