Life and register readings
Born in Niksar in 1843/44 (AH 1259), Karabet Arslanyan Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Ergani in 1882/83, at about 40, on a first salary of 650 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 40 or older. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Karabet Arslanyan as İkinci sınıf yol kondüktörü in Ergani. The lists have no entry for 1883 to 1888. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1898 give a second post, in Mosul as Nafia işleri üçüncü sınıf kondüktörü.
