Life and register readings
Born in Burdur in 1867/68 (AH 1284), Mehmed Şevket Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). The personnel record dates the first work to 1895/96, after the first annual entry. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, names Mehmed Şevket as Gönüllü asker, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1897 to 1900 give a second post, in Ayvalık as Duyûn-ı Umûmiyye üçüncü kâtip vekili. At the same time, from 1898/99, the lists also place Mehmed Şevket in Bergama as Duyûn-ı Umûmiyye Merkez Müdürlüğü kâtip vekili (İnfisal). Alongside, the lists for 1898 to 1901 give a second post, in Mytilene as Duyûn-ı Umûmiyye varidat (…) kâtip vekili.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 500 in 1898/99, in Ayvalık, when 55 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
