The life
Hatice Sabiha Görkey combined paid teaching with university study. Born in Üsküdar in 1888 to Hacı İsmail Bey and Ayşe Hanım, she completed the girls’ industrial school and Darülmuallimat before joining the Darülfünun mathematics graduates of 1917. Her first appointment was to teach embroidery at Molla Gürani in 1907; further posts took her through Üsküdar, Açık Türbe and Mal Hatun schools. In 1917 she was appointed deputy director and mathematics teacher at Bursa’s teacher-training college, but a dispute over her return from leave ended that appointment. She taught in Kadıköy and moved to Edirne in 1919, where she married the mathematics teacher Kemal Bey. She later worked in several provincial cities and served in parliament. She died on 22 November 1963. [Hakan ŞALLI 2021]
