Life and register readings
Born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265), Turnu Severin Şehbenderi Stepan Efendi was the child of a money-changer (sarraf). At about 14, in 1862/63, Turnu Severin Şehbenderi Stepan began work in Istanbul. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places Turnu Severin Şehbenderi Stepan in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Bâb-ı Âli Tahrirat-ı Hariciye Evrak Odası mülazımı, where the entries run to 1878/79. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1886. Alongside, the lists for 1867 to 1887 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Nakil. The lists give Infisal for 1878/79 instead of a title.
