Life and register readings

Born in Bursa in 1839/40 (AH 1255), Mehmed Şükrü Efendi came from the İslam community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmed Şükrü studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

Work began in 1852/53, at about 14, on a first salary of 120 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1852/53, names neither a title nor a place for Mehmed Şükrü. For 1853 to 1860 and 1861 to 1873 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Trabzon and Samsun from 1878 to 1884 and Istanbul in 1886/87. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1882. For 1884 to 1886 the lists have no entry. The lists give Infisal for 1860/61 and İstifa (resignation) for 1877/78 instead of a title.

Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1852/53 to a peak of 450 in 1873/74, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1886/87.
