Life and register readings

The life of Mehmed Atıf Efendi began in Malatya in 1846/47 (AH 1263). Mehmed Atıf began work in 1868/69, at about 21, on a first salary of 450 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, names Mehmed Atıf as Dördüncü Sınıf Teftiş Memuru, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1874 give a second post, in Kâhta as Teftis Memuru. Mehmed Atıf then moved to Kars and Kâhta from 1877 to 1879. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1880 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Kaymakam Vekili. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Atıf to Akçadağ, Adıyaman (Hısnımansur) and Kâhta from 1880 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1888/89 give a second post, in Akdağmadeni as a district governor (Kaymakam). Alongside, the lists for 1892 to 1894 give a second post, in Yalvaç as Kaymakam. The last posts were in Boğazlıyan in 1897/98 and Ürgüp in 1902/03, with a rise to Kaymakam in 1897/98. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.

Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,800 in 1892/93, as Kaymakam in Yalvaç, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
