Life and register readings
The life of Mahmud Efendi began in Harput in 1837/38 (AH 1253). Mahmud began work in Galata in 1867/68, at about 30. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, names Mahmud as Gümrük mülazımı, with no place. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
Pay rose from 340 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 550 in 1898/99, when two in three paid officials earned less. In all, 43 years of salary come to 230,520 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
