Life and register readings

The life of Mehmed Esad Efendi began in Malatya in 1880/81 (AH 1298). Mehmed Esad began work in 1892/93, at about 12. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, names Mehmed Esad as Stajyer, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1904 to 1907 give a second post, in Adıyaman as Bidayet Mahkemesi İkinci Kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1907 to 1909. Mehmed Esad then moved to Elazığ and Niğde from 1911 to 1912. The last post was in Antalya in 1912/13. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1911.

Pay rose from 225 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 1,000 in 1911/12, in Niğde, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1912/13.
