Life and register readings
Mehmed Asaf Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293); the father was a steward (kethüda). Work began in 1894/95, at about 18, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, names Mehmed Asaf as Muhasebe Kalemi memuru, with no place.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 1,350 in 1907/08, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 244,800 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1916/17.
