The life
Halide Edip Adıvar’s public career included teaching and educational inspection as well as the novels and political activity for which she became famous. Her father, Mehmed Edip Bey, was a palace clerk; her mother was Bedrifam Hanım. She attended the American girls’ college and received private lessons in several subjects and languages. Appointed to teach pedagogy at Darülmuallimat in 1909, she criticised school administration and submitted a resignation petition in 1913. She later worked in education in Syria at Cemal Paşa’s invitation and taught Western literature at Darülfünun in 1918. She married first Salih Zeki, with whom she had two sons, and later Adnan Adıvar. Her subsequent career included national struggle service, university teaching and parliament. She died in Istanbul on 9 January 1964. [İnci Enginün 1988] [Seyit Taşer 2012]
