Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Şükrü A ğa began in Safranbolu in 1838/39 (AH 1254); the father's occupation was "Rençber". Work began in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 39, on a first salary of 235 kuruş. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 39 or older. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Mehmed Şükrü A ğa in Istanbul as Emtia Gümrüğü kolcusu, where the entries run to 1898/99. Alongside, the lists for 1900 to 1903 give a second post, in Istanbul as Emtia Dahiliye Gümrüğü nezaret kolcusu. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1898/99 instead of a title.
