Life and register readings
Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), İskender Efendi came from the Katolik community; the father's occupation was "Halep Rüsum-i Sitte Nezareti Muhasebe Kalemi Varidat ve Masarifat Kâtibi". At about 18, in 1892/93, İskender began work in Arsuz, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places İskender in Arsuz as Arsuz Düyun-ı Umumiye İdaresi Harir Koza Fabrikası memuru. Next came a return to Aleppo, the birthplace, from 1894 to 1898. Alongside, the lists for 1897 to 1901 give a second post, in İskenderun as İskenderun Düyun-ı Umumiye İdaresi tezkire kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1900/01 give a second post, in Arsuz as Arsuz Düyun-ı Umumiye memuru. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1892/93.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 350 in 1900/01, in Arsuz, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 18,000 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
