Life and register readings
Mehmed Efendi was born in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka) in 1867/68 (AH 1284); the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Didymoteicho in 1881/82, at about 15. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Mehmed as Ma'a Tahrir-i Vergi Kalemi stajyeri in Didymoteicho, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1884/85. Mehmed then moved to Komotini (Gümülcine) and Edirne from 1885 to 1890. Alongside, the lists for 1889/90 give a second post, in Soufli as Memuriyet kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1892 give a second post, in Didymoteicho as Memuriyet kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1891 to 1894 give a second post, in Feres as Düyun-ı Umumiye memuru. The last post was in Edirne again in 1894/95. The lists give Infisal for 1885/86 and Azil (dismissal) for 1893/94 instead of a title.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 350 in 1889/90, the peak, in Soufli, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 29,088 kuruş, 67 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
